VA Medical Center Study Suggests That Significant Degree of Association Was Found Between Elderly Cognitive Function, Their Brain Volume and Distinct Nutrients

Nutri-Med Logic Corp: A New Study by the VA Medical Center and the Linus Pauling Institute has found an association between distinct nutrients, the brain volume and cognitive function in the elderly.
These distinct nutrients were Omega-3 Fatty Acids vitamins B (B1, B2, B6, folate, and B12), C, D, and E.
The protective role of Omega-3 Fatty Acids for the brain and the nervous system has been well established. Docosahexaenoic Acid (an Omega-3 fatty acid) is the precursor to NP-D1 (neuroprotectin D-1), which confers protection on the neurons (the brain and nervous system cells) from premature death. The human body is incapable of producing Omega-3 and, thus, it must be supplied through diet or by dietary supplementation. The association of Omega-3 with the higher brain volume and function, in the VA Medical Center Study, do suggest that those with proper Omega-3 diet had better brain volume and cognitive function.
The role of vitamin C and vitamin E is mainly for protection against oxidative stress on the cellular membrane. The concentration of both vitamin C and Vitamin E decreases by age, due to the decline of an internal anti-oxidant called glutathione, which decreases by age. Glutathione activates the inactive (oxidized) vitamin C, which in- turn activates the inactive (oxidized) vitamin E. The role of vitamin E is to protect the cellular membranes from free radical damage.
While glutathione is found in food, but its concentration does not significantly increase, neither through conventional food nor through its dietary supplementation.
In 1996, an anti-oxidant researcher at University of Berkeley, California, Dr. Packer, a professor of molecular and cell biology discovered that R-Alpha Lipoic Acid, an anti-oxidant and an endogenous co-enzyme in the metabolism of glucose, significantly increases the internal production of glutathione, which re-energizes vitamin C and E.
In the vitamin B group: B6, folate (B9) and B12 are all methyl donors. To maintain homeostasis during the life-time, stem cells have developed strict regulatory mechanisms to self-renew; hypomethylation (low methyl availability) interferes with this process and causes premature cellular aging. Genes and Development. 2004 May 1; 18(9): 1035–1046 .
The first experimental evidence of the age-dependent loss of genomic methylation was provided by G.D. Berdishev in 1967. Comparison of DNA isolated from tissues of embryos and newborn animals and as they aged (Ontogenesis) showed a gradual decrease of methylation upon aging.
Methyl is supplied through nutrients such as vitamins B6, B12, B9 (folic acid) and choline; the difference being that vitamins B6, B9 and B12 each donate only one methyl group, whereas choline is precursor to Betaine: a triple methyl donor.
It is also note worthy to state that Vitamin B group, specifically B1, B2, are involved in the production of cellular energy. R-Alpha Lipoic Acid, not only increases the glutathione (re-energizing vitamins C and E) but also improves the metabolism of glucose, resulting in a better cellular energy homeostasis.
